About Therapy

It’s all about the connection.

The world is not what it was when we were growing up. Technology is at an all-time high and has a lot of benefits… but a lot of costs as well. It can be hard to find the balance of digital versus in-person connection.

It’s important to have a therapist you and your child can connect with and create a solid relationship.

In therapy, I create a safe place to build connections between you and me, so you are comfortable opening up.

I also focus on improving communication and relationships between children and their caregivers.

My style is pretty informal, and I work to be engaging. No child or teen wants to talk to a “stiff” adult. I stock my office with fidgets, squishies, and games to create a feeling of warmth and comfort.

A space to embrace authenticity.

In my work with my adult clients, I bring genuineness, creativity, and a sense of humor that makes it easy to connect and feel safe to talk about difficult experiences.

I fully believe in practicing what I preach and examining my own thoughts, feelings, and motives.

Many clients have found my friendly, down-to-earth demeanor easy to connect with, which fosters a strong therapeutic relationship.

It’s not just about fun and games.

You want to make sure I both know what I’m doing and am someone your child will talk to. Your child is too important to waste time and not see progress.

I work to identify the individual needs and strengths of the person I am working with. I especially like to be creative in finding the “language” of the client, whether that is through art, music, talking, or writing.

When you work with me, we will identify specific goals, dig into the thoughts and feelings that are contributing to the difficulties, and create individualized coping strategies that work. You will see an improvement in attitude, mood, and in your interactions at home.

I can help.

I have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and specialize in working with children, adolescents, and families.

I have over 15 years of experience working with kids and teens in various settings, including residential treatment, specialized schools for children with behavioral and emotional disorders, a child advocacy center, community mental health centers, and private practice.

I am a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Florida. I have worked with children with depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, adjustment, and behavior disorders.

I view therapy as a journey that we will go through together.

I emphasize building a strong relationship with each person and help clients identify and understand their emotions. In therapy, you will learn to experience and accept the wide spectrum of feelings, so you can face them rather than have them control you.

We will work together to figure out where and why you get “stuck” in the same pattern of behavior that keeps you from getting where you want to be or doing what you really want to do. Learn tools you can use anytime, such as noticing your feelings as they come up, accepting them, and push past your fear.

You will create a toolkit of skills, so you can manage difficult emotions. This could be an actual box full of physical items that remind you of the skills you have developed.

Let’s talk and see…

If you or your child needs help, let’s talk and see if we’ll be a good fit to work together.

We will discuss your concerns and how I can help. I want to answer your questions and talk about how therapy works. This conversation can help you see my style and determine whether I’m the one you’re looking for.

About Me

Outside of the office…

I grew up in a small town in Iowa, so I’m a Midwestern girl at heart. I met my husband there when we worked at a residential treatment center for teenage girls. We have been together since 1999 and been married since 2004. We have two girls together. We spend most of our free time taking them to gymnastics practice and meets all over the state.

I went to graduate school at the Georgia School of Professional Psychology in Atlanta and came to Florida for internship. My husband and I liked it so much we stayed! I love living in Florida, even with the hurricanes. I love being outside, going to the beach, and doing stand-up paddle-boarding.

Other fun facts…

I am obsessed with Harry Potter and have a ton of related items in my office. I even named my chinchilla Harry Potter!

I stay up-to-date on current movies, Netflix shows, music, and video games… which helps me connect with children and teens. I use pop culture references often in session to help kids learn to express themselves and use their “superpowers.”
